On December 4th, 2017, Trump reduced the size of Bear Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante by over 2 million acres. This is the biggest removal of public lands in US history. There are different types of publicly owned land in the US. Some are for defense purposes, some are for energy production, but national monuments are for the protection of significant natural, cultural, or scientific features.

This region also includes sacred and prehistoric native american sites.

According to The Guardian, energy firms have made several attempts to lease more than 100,000 acres for oil and gas drilling either near or within what is now Bears Ears’ boundaries.

Since December of 2017, these once protected lands are now open to coal, oil and gas industries. This sets a very dangerous and real precedent for the reduction of other national monuments and parks.

This installation is a kind of continuous monument, or a living memorial of these areas, documenting the conditions and changes through time. There is an element of chance inherent in this project that depends on the frequency of updates to street view images. I found areas that were last updated in 2009, vs, some areas that were updated just last year. So in effect, this is a documentation of a space, where the sense of time is ambiguous, and unpredictable. But as a collection, the images represent a synthesis of various histories and meanings associated with a place.

With this live feed of images, I suspect that in the next few years, when this land becomes interrupted by industry, there will be an interesting juxtaposition of images from the land’s protected past, and its endangered future.
